Canada’s visa applications backlog

Canada’s visa applications backlog

Canada has been a popular destination for immigrants from around the world. The country attracts investors and skilled workers with opportunities for personal and professional growth. They also have one of the most open migration programs in the world. This makes it convenient for applicants to explore their options and make their move to Canada!

According to Statistics Canada and its 2021 Census release, Canada’s population rose up to 37 million in 2021, a 5.2% increase from 2016, with the distant suburbs of large cities and downtowns seeing the strongest growth. Nearly 80% of these are immigrants. This shows just how many people have moved to Canada and are still thriving there! This is how Canada keeps its position as the fastest-growing G7 country in the world.

However, according to a new report, nearly 2 million applicants around the globe are awaiting the result of their Canadian visa applications. According to media reports, the data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) show that as of February 1, the country has a visa application backlog of approximately 1.8 million. The backlog is reported to include applications from permanent residents, future citizens, temporary workers, overseas students, and visitors. About 29,165 Permanent Residency applications have been pending since October 2021.

Since October 2021, study permits for Canada have declined, although the overall temporary residence inventory is nearly up to 73,000 applicants. Throughout the pandemic, the demand for various temporary residence categories has increased while also filling in for Canada’s worker shortages. All these categories add up to 1,815,628 applicants waiting for visa decisions.
There are 3 categories that lead to temporary residency – visitors, workers, and students.

However, Canada aims to assess and decide for 147,000 permanent residency applications in the first quarter of 2022, with the allocation of $85 million towards IRCC’s budget.
